Description

Elderly people living in long-term nursing homes face maltreatment and neglect daily. They are especially at risk as most have several chronic health conditions that restrict their cognitive and physical abilities and make them dependent upon others. Patients are often crouched up, lonely, and in despair due to caregivers who are ignorant and neglectful about providing care for residents when they need it most. Residents feel voiceless, sad, and hungry throughout the day. Additionally, numerous people seem unwilling or hesitant to disclose neglect or abusive behavior for concern of revenge or other harmful consequences to their everyday lives. Much of the abuse and neglect is due to a lack of staff sensitivity training for working with vulnerable adults and caregivers’ high workload that leads to mental and physical burnout. This presentation will examine the impact and causes of this abuse and neglect. It will then offer possible solutions that could help eliminate this critical issue and improve the quality of care for nursing home residents.
