Description

Victims of childhood sexual abuse are later confronted with unresolved trauma that manifests into addiction and suicidal tendencies because of our current social construct of remaining silent.

We have an ongoing crisis in the United States that needs immediate attention. As more research and data come to light within the scientific community of psychology, as well as a more transparent criminal database, we are seeing the long term mental health effects on the victims of childhood sexual abuse. Victims of childhood sexual abuse are suffering from addiction, suicidal ideation, and even suicide due to the lack of structure, funding, and accessibility for proper mental health treatment. The stigma of staying silent about these issues does not serve the community, but rather aids in the destruction of the hope that victims hold onto while navigating life with a grave unresolved trauma. My presentation will highlight the current flaws and inattention within the healthcare industry that is failing to provide adequate care for a vulnerable population.
