In recent years medical mistrust has become prevalent and more widespread in many communities. Although medical mistrust is increasing globally, the Black community in the United States is disparately impacted. This community, for example, has a higher risk for heart diseases, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza, pneumonia, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. The Black community has a unique history of medical mistrust based on their historical and present day experiences with systemic racism in in the healthcare. This presentation will examine what the healthcare system is doing today to perpetuate this mistrust and offer ways to improve trust in the Black community and beyond.
