Description

While advancements in neurology and the development of psychiatric drugs have done a lot of good, an over-reliance on pharmaceutical treatment has left out critical other aspects of the multidisciplinary approach. I will be discussing the alarming rise of mental illness in the United States and the influence Big Pharma has had towards this shift to psychopharmacology becoming the dominant, and often only, treatment. With the outlook of mental health in the U.S. not improving and the extraordinary financial toll it is taking on our economy, I hope to instill a sense of urgency towards change. We must look at the holes in our current trend of reliance on psychotropic drugs and forge a new trajectory that will ease these financial burdens and restore humanity to our mental healthcare systems.
