Abstract

Renal cell carcinoma is a malignant condition that impairs kidney function and is commonly associated with risk factors such as smoking and hypertension. This case study examines an 83-year-old female with a significant medical history who presented for further evaluation of an indeterminate renal mass previously identified on CT and MRI imaging, which revealed a benign cyst and a separate solid lesion with concerning characteristics. A renal ultrasound demonstrated a simple cyst and a distinct hypoechoic, ill-defined lesion, raising concern for possible neoplasm. Follow-up imaging with contrast-enhanced CT was recommended for further characterization. This case highlights the importance of ultrasound in differentiating cystic from solid renal masses and identifying suspicious features that warrant further evaluation. Additionally, it highlights the disparities patients face in rural communities, including limited access to specialized imaging. Improving access to diagnostic services and expanding resources in rural areas may reduce these disparities and improve patient outcomes.
