The Vera Project was founded as an all-ages, volunteer-fueled music and arts venue in Seattle by James Keblas, Shannon Stewart, and Kate Becker in 2001 in response to the restrictions on youth access to popular music concerts due to the Teen Dance Ordinance. Programming was held in a variety of sites expanding to include visual arts, sound engineering, and musicians’ resources. Vera moved into its long-term home at Seattle Center 2007, continuing its volunteer-fueled participatory approach that has garnered national and international attention.
