Abstract
This critical reflection serves as a counternarrative, detailing the experience of a queer, Black, woman of color, scholar-practitioner, and her relationship to emotional labor in higher education. This reflection will define emotional labor and provide concrete examples of how emotional labor manifests in practice. Though race and gender serve as an intersecting focal point, emotional labor is positioned to be viewed as a natural part of student affairs work. However, emotional labor becomes a problem when one is over-extended and engaged in high levels of emotional labor that are not congruent with different forms of compensation and holistic wellness.
