Abstract
Disasters are occurring around the world with increased frequency and intensity. Nurses are the largest workforce in the healthcare professions delivering the majority of the worlds healthcare interventions. Despite consistent roles on the frontlines of disaster response, nurses lack confidence and willingness to participate in disaster management due to limited education and training in disaster nursing competencies. A task-force of disaster nursing experts has declared a vision for advancing disaster nursing education in the United States. Schools of nursing are key stakeholders for improving education and training opportunities for the generalist nurse, so that nurses are prepared to respond to a disaster or public health crisis upon entry into the profession. Seattle faces more hazard risks than any other US city, and there are current initiatives driving institutions to define their role in King County Disaster preparedness and emergency management systems. This project aims to explore the importance of disaster nursing initiatives and concludes with a discussion of local opportunities for schools of nursing to integrate disaster nursing education into programming.
