Abstract
This Project sought to evaluate if the support model recommended by South African PMTCT policy could be applied to the area of infant feeding. By using the South African PMTCT buddy and an infant feeding support person or infant feeding buddy (IFB), reinforcement could be provided to help mothers adhere to their chosen method of safe infant feeding. Study investigators hypothesized that counseling these 'buddies' and mothers together regarding safe feeding could provide support for HIV-positive mothers back in their homes. From interview data on the experiences of HIV- positive mothers and their buddies, this project sought to assess who would make the best IFB and make recommendations for future support strategies.
