Abstract
The goal of this scholarly project is to examine the association between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosed in childhood and the potential for and substance abuse. In order to gain understanding of the relationship between these disorders, behavioral and neurobiological connections between the disorders are examined. Current methods of diagnosing ADHD and its subtypes are outlined. A comprehensive, critical review ol the literature regarding ADHD and its relationship to substance abuse is presented. Finally, evidence-based recommendations are provided for mental health practitioners regarding implications for medication management and patient education for individuals diagnosed with ADHD in childhood.
