Abstract
The aim of this literature review is to identify transgender specific health care issues that impact primary care delivery and, subsequently, identify the type of skills and knowledge that primary care providers require to deal with these issues. The specific objectives addressed in this review are as follows: * To define the appropriate and preferred terminology that accurately describes gender variants * To identify potential barriers to health care that transgender patients face * To describe specific health effects and outcomes in the transgender population receiving cross-sex hormone therapy * To summarize how the above impact transgender health and propose treatment guidelines for cross-sex hormone therapy
