Abstract
Placebo effects are well acknowledged in research settings and are receiving increasing attention in clinical settings and the popular press. There is extensive research on possible psychological mechanisms such as expectation and conditioning, and biological mechanisms such as endogenous opioids. Although several publications have summarized research on placebo effects, clinical applications of placebo principles are infrequently discussed. This paper reviews recent and selected classic research findings on placebo effects and summarizes implications for primary care providers seeking to enhance or promote positive placebo effects in their patients.
