Abstract

The purpose of conducting this inquiry on acute confusion in frail, elderly adults was to gain an understanding of this phenomenon from a community perspective. There are compelling reasons for beginning to investigate this phenomenon from the community perspective. Population trends project that 20% of the population will be age 65 or greater by 2025, with an expected dramatic increase in frail elderly people (Lookinland & Anson, 1995). The concurrent health care trend in the United States is for a decreasing utilization of hospitals or tertiary care settings in an effort to reduce health care costs (Hassmiller, 1996). The Care of frail, elderly adults is clearly shifting away from the traditional institutional milieu and moving towards residential settings.
