Abstract
The focus of this paper is the growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. As the prevalence of both hypertension and diabetes grows, a healthcare response to screen and treat these diseases is needed in order to slow the rising rates. As seen from the HIV/AIDS epidemic, it is possible to address such a large scale health crisis with a systematic approach and increased resources. We suggest applying what we've learned in screening and treatment of HIV/AIDS to address NCDs such as HTN and Diabetes. It is a complex problem in low and middle-income countries where healthcare resources are scarce, however much has been learned from decades of HIV/ AIDS management. Indeed HIV/AIDS has become a chronic condition rather than an acute one for many people throughout SSA. Our recommendations include improved access to care and treatment, training for healthcare professionals, and community education and engagement.
